I am a 29 year old gay guy who used to live in Madrid. The neighborhood you want to go to is called Chueca. It is north of the Gran Via and extends from around Fuencarral to Castellana. There is a stop on the Light Green subway line called "Chueca" and it is in the middle of the neighborhood. There are a few bars that are always pretty good ie.
One of them is "LL", which is located at 11 Pelayo. Its not such a great bar, but there are always people there. Fun if you don't mind drag queens performing. Another is "Liquid" at 8 Barquillo. This is Madrid's answer to a New York bar. Usually busy on weekends.
Restaurant & bar
My favorite is "Sunrise" at 7 Barbieri. This is a very young hip crowd and it open until 5 or 6 in the morning. The downside is that it is only open from Thursday to Sunday. If you are in the mood for a big nightclub, "Cool" is good on weekends. The bar in Chueca that everyone still out ends his night in is "Rick's" at 8 Clavel. It's pretty divey, but when all the other bars are closed, the remaining cute and not so cute guys all go there. There is also a great coffee to shop to hang out in during the day and pretty cruisy! It may not be a bad idea to pop in there and play the "Fun cute foreigner' game and find out where people will be out that night!
